SUBSTANCE: invention can be used for applying coatings onto metal substrates used in manufacture of vehicles. The composition for applying a coating comprises a melamine resin including imine and methylol functional groups and at least one polymer capable of reacting with the melamine resin. Said polymer is produced from components containing more than 20% wt. of polytetrahydrofurane and more than 5% wt. of carboxylic acid or an anhydride thereof, has an acid number of at least 15 and a pKa of less than 5. Also proposed are a substrate, a multi-layer coating system, and a method for coating a substrate with the multilayer coating.

EFFECT: reduction in the hardening temperature of the coating, improvement in the adhesion and resistance to solvents thereof.
