FIELD: instrumentation.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to instrumentation, namely the optical detection of surface defects in steel material. The inventions detect surface defects in steel by optically detecting surface defects of a steel material, and include an irradiation step in which the same target test portion is irradiated with light beams from different directions using two or more distinguishable light sources; and a detecting step detecting a surface defect in the target portion to be inspected based on the degree of overlap of bright areas extracted from two or more images formed by the reflected light rays.

EFFECT: inventions are capable of accurately distinguishing between areas of steel and surface defects, and are also capable of increasing steel yield by accurately detecting surface defects.
