SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a device and method for monitoring linear surface defects. The surface inspection device as described in the present invention includes two or more oblique linear light sources that emit oblique illumination light beams onto the target inspection area of steel material; one or more line sensors that receive each of the reflected light beams corresponding to the said oblique illumination light beams from the respective oblique line light sources, the reflected light rays emanating from the target inspection area for each oblique line light source, and form images; and a detection unit that detects a linear surface defect in a target inspection area using the images generated by the said one or more linear sensors. Orthographic projections of at least two oblique illumination light rays from the said oblique illumination light beams from two or more oblique linear light sources onto the surface of the steel material are orthogonal to each other in the target inspection zone.

EFFECT: increase in accuracy of monitoring linear surface defects.
