SUBSTANCE: inventions relates to medical technology. Determination of a suitable set of parameters for the operation of a radiation source in a photothermal targeted therapy system for targeted action on a chromophore embedded in a medium is disclosed. Before using the therapy protocol, the following is carried out: 1) applying at least one laser pulse from a radiation source with a preset power level at the location to be treated, the preset power level being below a known damage threshold; 2) measuring the temperature of the skin surface at the location to be treated after application of the at least one laser pulse; 3) evaluation of the relationship between the parameters of the radiation source and the temperature of the skin surface; and 4) defining a safe operating range for the radiation source to prevent thermal damage to the environment at the location to be treated, provided that the chromophore is effectively targeted when the therapy protocol is applied.
