FIELD: nuclear power engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to nuclear power engineering and concerns methods and means for protection and removal of residual heat from the structures of nuclear power plants in emergency situations, including in severe accidents (SA), when the design of the nuclear reactor vessel is subjected to high-intensity thermal effects from the core and molten core materials. The invention can be used in systems for protection and emergency removal of residual heat from the housings of melt localization devices under SA that are beyond design. The method and device for cooling and protecting the nuclear reactor vessel are based on the joint use of various cooling schemes and cooling media (dispersed liquid, vapor-liquid, steam-gas, steam). Atomizing devices are positioned with a gap around the outer wall of the reactor vessel, which makes it possible to intensify the process of cooling and protecting the nuclear reactor vessel at high intensities of thermal load acting on the nuclear reactor vessel.
EFFECT: possibility of preserving the integrity of the design of the nuclear reactor vessel and preventing the release of radioactive materials outside the reactor plant under beyond-design SA.
