FIELD: nuclear power engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a means for preventing the melting of a nuclear reactor vessel under conditions of high-intensity thermal effects from molten materials of the reactor core in a severe accident. In a method for protecting a nuclear reactor, on the upper surface of a melting bath, a developed heat exchange surface is formed, consisting of a part of the upper surface of the melting bath and surfaces of heat-conductive elements located on the upper melting surface. A device for protecting a nuclear reactor and preventing the melting of its vessel in severe accidents with the formation of a melting bath in the reactor vessel includes a developed heat exchange surface consisting of at least part of the upper surface of the melting bath, and this part of the melting bath is between heat-conductive elements with non-negative buoyancy in the melt, and located on the surface of this melting bath, and of those parts of outer surfaces of these elements that are located above the level of this part of the upper surface of the melting bath.
EFFECT: possibility of reducing the intensity of thermal load acting on the nuclear reactor vessel from the melting bath, which leads to the possibility of preserving the integrity of the nuclear reactor vessel and preventing the release of radioactive materials outside the reactor plant in severe accidents beyond the design.
