SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ecology, in particular to the bioindication of surface water pollution. A method for determining the combinatory index of water surface pollution is carried out by measuring the saprobiont properties of freshwater mollusks. The method includes the division of the coastal zone of the polluted and control reservoirs into 10 bioindication sites with a size of 2 m along the shore and 0.5 m across the shore. Then, a 1.5-2 cm thick layer of silt is collected from each site of the contaminated and control reservoirs with the help of a hand net. Mollusks are identified into groups according to the atlas of freshwater mollusks. Water samples are taken at the same places of collection for chemical control of surface water pollution and statistical processing of the results obtained. The saprobiont properties of mollusks are measured by the indicator of the relative vitality of the entire ecosystem of mollusks, calculated by the formula

where Gm is the vitality of all saprobionts in polluted water; Gmc is the vitality of all saprobionts in control (uncontaminated) water; y is the structural completeness coefficient of saprobiont groups, ymax= 3; Sm is the density of the saprobiont population, units/m2.

EFFECT: use of the invention will make it possible to assess the degree of contamination of surface waters by the state of freshwater mollusks-bioindicators inhabiting them.
