SUBSTANCE: invention relates to biotechnology, in particular, to a method for monitoring the load of at least one pathogen in a bird population, wherein the method includes the following stages: selection and combination of the material of excrement samples collected from the bird population; homogenisation of the material of the combined sample obtained at stage (a); dilution and optionally stabilisation of the material of the combined sample obtained at stage (b), using an aqueous buffer solution; lysis of the cellular material contained in the diluted material of the sample obtained at stage (c); isolation of the material representing nucleic acids from the lysed sample material obtained at stage (d); identification and quantification of at least one pathogen-specific target gene or a functional fragment thereof contained in the nucleic acid isolate obtained at stage (e); repeating the stages (a)–(f) over successive time intervals and tracking the changes in the amount of at least one pathogen-specific target gene over time.

EFFECT: ensured monitoring of the load of a pathogen in a bird population.
