SUBSTANCE: apparatus for preparing and dispensing a beverage, such as tea, coffee, hot chocolate, cold chocolate, milk, soup or baby food, containing a capsule recognition module for recognising a capsule inserted into said apparatus in the capsule recognition position, wherein the capsule recognition module comprises a camera for capturing an image of at least part of said capsule in said capsule recognition position; wherein the capsule recognition module comprises a neural network computing apparatus, wherein said neural network computing apparatus is configured to determine the type of said capsule from multiple preset capsule types based on the image of at least part of said capsule captured by said camera.

EFFECT: improvement in the dispensing of a beverage by apparatuses capable of automatically reliably identifying capsules.
