SUBSTANCE: device (1) for preparing and dispensing beverage (2), such as tea, coffee, hot chocolate, cold chocolate, milk, soup or a baby food product, comprising a capsule recognition module (8) for recognizing the type of capsule (3) inserted into capsule (3) device (1), wherein capsule recognition module (8) comprises light source (82) for illuminating at least part of surface of capsule (3) and optical sensor (81) for detecting optical property of at least part of surface of capsule (3); and wherein the capsule recognition module (8) is configured to: determine the optical property correction value by detecting the optical property of at least a portion of the surface of capsule (3) when said light source (82) is turned off; determining at least one selective value of the optical property by detecting the optical property of at least a portion of the surface of capsule (3), when light source (82) is on; calculating the corrected sampled value using the correction value and at least one sampled value; determining the type of capsule by comparing the corrected sampled value with at least one reference value, wherein at least one reference value relates to the type of capsule.
EFFECT: beverage preparation and dispensing device allows automatic correct identification of capsules.
