SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of control of quality parameters of fibrous materials and pertains to a method for estimating the fineness of bast fibres. Method includes forming a fibrous sample, analysing said sample by optical microscopy, and processing a digital image, followed by estimating the fineness of fibres. The sample is formed by a uniaxial break of the initial sample weight of a certain length and mass, consisting of mutually parallel fibrous complexes. The broken sections of the sample weight are then analysed while illuminated from below. The fineness of fibres is estimated on the basis of analysis of a black-and-white image in the form of the arithmetic mean value of the width of the images of the fibres, calculated based on the total value of width thereof in different sections along the length.
