SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in internal combustion engines. Method for operation of an internal combustion engine includes the change in the number of working cylinders proportional to the value of load on the engine. Fuel is added to the working cylinders (1), (2) so as to compensate for the energy of the lost working stroke of non-operating cylinders and the energy spent on the operation thereof in the current operation mode of the engine. Sparking is performed at the release stroke of oxidiser from the non-operating cylinder. The oxidiser is released from the non-operating cylinder and into the intake collector (10) of the engine.

EFFECT: increase in the temperature of suctioned air in the working cylinder and increase in the heat of combustion of fresh fuel charge.
