FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method for direct chemical conversion of an initial sugar mixture consisting of biomass containing fructose, sucrose, or combinations thereof into a product of a mixture of lower multiatomic alcohols, including both propylene glycol and ethylene glycol. In the proposed method, the initial sugar mixture and a hydrogen source are supplied to a reaction container, where they interact in the presence of a hydrogenolysis catalyst containing molybdenum (Mo) and ruthenium (Ru). At the same time, the content of Mo is from 0.5 to 10% of the weight of the initial sugar mixture, and the content of Ru is 3-7% of the weight of the hydrogenolysis catalyst.
EFFECT: predominant obtainment of propylene glycol compared to ethylene glycol in a product.
