FIELD: biotechnology.

SUBSTANCE: methods for processing plant biomass. A method is proposed for obtaining at least two target products - target alditols and target glycols as conjugated products, including: providing a mixed stream of monomeric sugars C5 and C6 obtained from decomposed raw materials based on plant biomass; continuous hydrogenation of a mixed stream of C5 and C6 monomer sugars to form a mixed stream of C5 and C6 alditols; separating the first target product - the target alditol or the target mixture of alditols, from the mixed stream of C5 and C6 alditols with discarding the residual mixed stream of C5 and C6 alditols; continuous hydrogenolysis of the residual mixed stream of C5 and C6 alditols to form a mixed stream of C2-C4 glycols; and isolating the second target product - the target glycol or the target mixture of glycols, from the mixed stream of C2-C4 glycols; wherein at least 10% of the total yield of the target product is either the target alditol/target alditol mixture or the target glycol/target mixture of glycols, and the first target product is isolated by crystallization.

EFFECT: highly efficient, low-complexity process with improved production agility, reduced waste and higher overall yield compared to traditional alditol or glycol processes.
