FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry, specifically, to synthesis of hydroquinone constituting an important raw material for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Disclosed is a method for producing hydroquinone, consisting in oxidating phenol with ammonium persulphate, or potassium, or sodium in an alkaline medium at 40 to 60 °C in the presence of 0.01 to 0.3% wt. phthalocyanine oxidation catalyst (cobalt, or iron (II), or iron (III), or manganese, or nickel, or zinc phthalocyanine), followed by cooling the reaction mixture and releasing intermediate 4-hydroxyphenyl sulphate. The target hydroquinone is produced through the hydrolysis of the latter in an acidic medium at 85 to 95 °C.
EFFECT: higher output of the target product.
