FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry, specifically, to synthesis of pyridine-2(1H)-one (other names of the compound: 2-hydroxypyridine, 2-pyridone), constituting an important raw material for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Method for producing pyridine-2(1H)-one consists in oxidating pyridine with ammonium persulphate in an alkaline medium at 40 to 60 °C in the presence of 0.01 to 0.3% wt. phthalocyanine oxidation catalyst (cobalt, or iron (II), or iron (III), or manganese, or nickel, or zinc phthalocyanine), followed by cooling the reaction mixture and releasing an intermediate 2-pyridinyl sulphate. Pyridine-2 (1H)-one is produced through the hydrolysis of the latter in an acidic medium at 85 to 95 °C.

EFFECT: simplified production method and higher output of the target product.
