FIELD: organic chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry and specifically to a method of producing phenol, which is an important raw material for chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Phenol is obtained by oxidation of benzene with ammonium persulphate (APS) at 45-60 °C in an alkaline medium in the presence of sodium hydroxide with a molar ratio of benzene:NaOH:APS equal to 1:3:1.5, in presence of 0.01-0.4 wt.% of an oxidation catalyst selected from phthalocyanines of cobalt, iron (II), iron (III), zinc, manganese, nickel, for 10-15 hours followed by extraction of intermediate phenyl sulphate by extraction with butanol, hydrolysis of the latter with sulphuric acid at 90 °C extraction of target compound by ethanol extraction with output of 41-86%.
EFFECT: development of mild reaction conditions based on high output of phenol and cheapening of raw material.
