FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention provides processes of conversion of pyruvate obtained from sugars or other carbon sources into valuable C5 materials, such as levulinic acid, levulinate composite esters, valerolactone, and derivatives thereof. In particular, the invention relates to a method for the production of 2-oxo-4-valerolactone, while the method includes conversion of pyruvate into 4-hydroxy-2-oxopentanic acid by aldol attachment, and conversion of 4-hydroxy-2-oxopentanic acid into 2-oxo-4-valerolactone by lactonization, where lactonization is carried out at pH from low to neutral. The invention also relates to a method for the production of methylenemethylbutyrolactone.
EFFECT: obtaining valuable C5 materials.
