FIELD: electric engineering.
SUBSTANCE: claimed method for the modernization of the DC traction electric drive (DCED) ЭД-118 for diesel and electric locomotives involves dismantling the main and auxiliary poles, the collector and brush units of the original DCED without replacing the housing, shields, shaft, bearings, and then the final assembly of the DCED with the stator of N winding sections and a rotor with permanent rare earth magnets. The N number of stator winding sections is 5 with the P number of rotor speed control stages equal to 4. A feature of the invention is to provide the ability to control the rotor speed by changing the number of powered winding sections (5; 3; 2 sections, 1 section). Rare earth permanent magnets of NdFeB and/or SmCo brands are used as magnets.
EFFECT: increase in energy efficiency and in service life of an electric drive.
