SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of digital video compression and decompression technologies, and more particularly to encoding and decoding the intra-prediction mode of a current block using intra-prediction mode information of an adjacent block. A video encoding method and apparatus is provided that determines whether to use a Most Likely Mode List (MPM), based on encoding information of a current block, obtains, from a bitstream, intra-prediction mode index information indicating one of the candidate intra-prediction modes, included in the MPM list, and determining the intra prediction mode of the current block using the obtained intra prediction mode index information, wherein the list of intra prediction mode candidates is obtained by using at least one of the intra prediction mode of the left block adjacent to the left side the current block, and the intra-prediction mode of the top block adjacent to the top side of the current block.
