FIELD: method for modifying the surface of a hard titanium alloy with titanium carbide.

SUBSTANCE: surface of a solid titanium alloy is irradiated with an ion beam composed of 30% H and 70% C+, particle energy: 250 keV, pulse duration: 60 ns, number of pulses: 1, ion current density: 150 A/cm2, while heating the surface of solid titanium alloy up to a temperature of 2000ºC. Titanium carbide TiC is formed by irradiation with a pulsed ion beam due to the interaction of a molten layer of a hard titanium alloy with gaseous hydrocarbons and a carbon-containing solid residue of decomposition of carbon contaminants contained on the surface of a solid titanium alloy, or due to carbothermal reduction of surface titanium oxide TiO2 during its interaction with surface carbon contamination on the surface of a hard titanium alloy.

EFFECT: formation of wear-resistant surfaces of hard titanium alloys.
