FIELD: video coding.

SUBSTANCE: prediction for video coding using merging of motion vector difference (MMVD) to reduce the complexity of MMVD and improve performance. A method and device for predicting video coding is provided, according to which a merge candidate set containing an MMVD candidate is generated, wherein the MMVD candidate is obtained by determining a base candidate and modifying one or more parts of the motion vector (MV) expression of the base candidate to generate an MMVD candidate. If the current block has a block size belonging to at least one default block size, and the target candidate in the merge candidate set is bidirectional prediction after the merge candidate set is created: replacing the target candidate with a single prediction candidate; encoding or decoding the current motion information associated with the current block using a single prediction candidate on the video encoder/video decoder side.
