FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the metallurgy of rare metals titanium, zirconium and hafnium, and in particular to methods of chlorination of rare metal raw materials, and can be used to produce titanium tetrachloride, as well as in the nuclear power industry to produce zirconium tetrachloride used as a starting and working substance, in particular, for purification of zirconium from hafnium and other impurities by the method of molten salt distillation. The method for obtaining tetrachlorides of rare metals titanium, zirconium and/or hafnium includes loading and chlorination of crushed rare metal raw materials in a furnace in the presence of sulphur and/or sulphur chlorides in a mixture with chlorine with an atomic ratio of chlorine: sulphur from 4 to 20. Chlorination is carried out in a multi-hearth furnace, or in a drum furnace, or in a fluidized bed furnace, or in a melt chlorinator.
EFFECT: efficient processing of mineral raw materials of various types, both natural silicates and oxides of PM, and synthetically obtained dioxides and oxychlorides, and at lower chlorination temperatures than in previously known methods, with a lower consumption of a reducing agent and with simplified disposal of gaseous wastes, with the possibility of chlorination of radioactive thorium-containing raw materials.
