FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metallurgy of rare metals, namely to methods of chloration of rare metal feed stock, and can be used during production of zirconium and hafnium chlorides for nuclear power. Method of chloration of rare metal feed stock includes mixing of the ground feed stock with carbon containing reducing agent, charge treatment by 0.5-2% water solution of the dissoluble potassium and natrium silicates, or their mixture, it granulation and drying to residual moisture content at least 0.5%, high temperature chloration of the charge in melt containing alkali metal chloride or mixture of alkali and alkali-earth metal chlorides. At that melt containing additionally at least 40 wt % of potassium chlorinezirconate (K2ZrCl6) or potassium chlorineluminate (KAlCl4) of melt weight.
EFFECT: increased rate of chlorination of rare metal feed stock and reduced temperature of chlorination.
