SUBSTANCE: beverage preparation machine comprises a pump (5) for supplying fluid to the brewing chamber, in which a portion package (20) is placed, as well as a flow meter (3) for measuring the fluid flow in the brewing chamber. The machine electronics (9) activates the pump (5) and obtains the flow measurements to, for example, turn off the pump after a predetermined amount of fluid has been delivered. According to one aspect of the invention, the electronics (9) is configured to evaluate the measured flow rate and, from this evaluation, distinguish between the first state "brewing with the portion pack inserted" and the second state "water flow without the portion pack inserted" to detect the presence of the portion pack in the brewing chamber.
