SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a beverage preparation machine for preparing a beverage from a portion capsule. Beverage preparation machine for making a beverage from a portion capsule comprises a body having a capsule mounting opening, brewing unit configured to receive a portion capsule therethrough, a brewing unit comprising a first brewing unit part and a second brewing unit part movable relative to the brewing unit first part (3), wherein the first and second parts of the brewing unit are configured to form a brewing chamber, at least partially portion surrounding the batch capsule during the brewing process, located in the brewing position for the brew beverage brewing and its removal from the portion capsule. Additionally, the beverage preparation machine comprises an electric drive for movement of the second part of the brewing unit relative to the first part of the brewing unit and control device for electric drive control. Control device is configured to determine the current position of the second part of the brewing unit relative to the first part of the brewing unit at any moment in time. Besides, electric power consumed power can be measured to make conclusion on brewing unit state depending on measured position from maximum power values (121, 125, 123, 122).

EFFECT: beverage preparation machine reliably responds to faults and/or failures during brewing procedure based on portion capsule and, besides, provides for possibility of proper response in case of failure, for example, by assistance to user and its instruction on elimination of malfunction.
