FIELD: organic chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the production of a diester of general formula (I)

where R¹ represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R²-R⁶ are independently selected from hydrogen atoms, methyl group, butyl group, phenyl group, vinyl group, 1-methylvinyl group, or groups R⁴ and R⁶ can form 6- a member saturated ring, which can be used as a monomer to obtain various poly(meth)acrylates and corresponding copolymers. This method includes at least the following stage (a): (a) carrying out the reaction between (meth)acrylic anhydride of general formula (II)

and epoxide of general formula (III)

to obtain a product mixture containing a diester of general formula (I).

EFFECT: reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst in combination with a co-catalyst, the catalyst being a first catalyst, a second catalyst, or a combination of both, wherein the first catalyst is magnesium chloride, bromide or iodide or rare earth trifluoromethanesulfonate; and the second catalyst is a chromium(III) salt and the co-catalyst is selected from the group consisting of a tertiary amine, a quaternary ammonium salt, a tertiary phosphine, and a quaternary phosphonium salt.
