SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and system for determining the cause of excessive fuel consumption. The method for monitoring and determining excessive fuel consumption by a ground vehicle, implemented by the network infrastructure, includes steps that are carried out sequentially. A set of different input parameters is carried out, related to environmental conditions and task performance, with technical vehicles and with the driving style of the vehicle, on the basis of which the first expected fuel consumption over time is estimated. Then, a second acquisition of the measured fuel consumption over time is carried out, and the two obtained fuel consumption measurements are compared in real time, thereby obtaining an error value over time. If the value rises sharply, a flag will be activated indicating the condition of excessive fuel consumption. Next, a set of input parameters is obtained associated with stored records related to events regarding deviations and changes in engine and/or vehicle operating conditions. Then, the moment of storing said one record is compared with the moment of said activation of said first flag. Stored records include error messages (DTC) and over-pressure detection, trailer disconnection and reconnection, power take-off (PTO) activation.
