FIELD: olefin polymerization technology.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a copolymer of an olefin and an unsaturated carboxylic acid as well as a method of its preparation and use. The following is described: a copolymer of an olefin and an unsaturated carboxylic acid obtained in the form of spherical and/or spherically similar particles of the copolymer, at least part of the spherical and/or spherically similar particles of the copolymer has a cavity inside, where the specified copolymer consists of a structural unit obtained from C2-C16 α-olefin, and a structural unit of Formula I

where in Formula I each L1-L3 is independently selected from the group consisting of H and L4 is a C1-C10 alkylene having a side group, the said side group in L4 is one or more of the group consisting of C1-C10 alkyl; where in the specified copolymer, the content of the structural unit of Formula I is 0.2–15.0 mol.%; and where the method of obtaining the said copolymer includes bringing into contact C2-C16α an α-olefin and an unsaturated carboxylic acid represented by Formula II with a catalyst and a chain transfer agent for reaction in the presence of an alkane solvent to obtain the said copolymer

where in Formula II each L1-L3 is independently selected from H and L4 and is a C1-C10 alkylene having a side group, the said side group in L4 represents either one or more of the group consisting of C1-C10 alkyl. Also the following is described: a method of obtaining a copolymer of an olefin and an unsaturated carboxylic acid, including contacting C2-C16 α-olefin and an unsaturated carboxylic acid represented by formula II with a catalyst and with a chain transfer agent for reaction in the presence of an alkane solvent to obtain a copolymer. Also the use of a copolymer or copolymer obtained by the claimed method as an expandable polyolefin material is described.

EFFECT: provision of polymer by polymerization of olefin and unsaturated carboxylic acid in the form of spherical and/or spherically similar particles, which does not require further processing, such as granulation.
