SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an aerosol generating device and a system containing such a device. The aerosol generating device (10) comprises an upper part (20), a main part (70) and a cartridge (50). The upper part contains a proximal end containing a cavity (22) for receiving an aerosol generating article (12). The upper part further comprises a distal end containing the cartridge upper connector (24) and an upper air flow channel extending from the cartridge upper connector to said cavity. The main part contains the proximal end containing the main connector (72) of the cartridge. The main body further comprises a main air inlet and a main air flow path extending from the main air inlet to the main cartridge connector. The top cartridge connector is removably attachable to the proximal end of the cartridge, and the main cartridge connector is removably attachable to the distal end of the cartridge, enabling the first mode of operation. The top cartridge connector is directly releasable to the main cartridge connector to allow a second mode of operation. It is possible for the wick to absorb liquid from the air stream only when the user puffs on the air outlet by separating the wick and the liquid storage part.

EFFECT: it is also possible to prevent or reduce leakage of the liquid aerosol generating substrate and prevent or reduce contamination of the device.
