SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an improved method for obtaining an amino acid from an amino acid salt using three-chamber electrodialysis with bipolar membranes. The proposed method includes: introducing an aqueous electrolyte comprising a first acid into an acid chamber of a three-chamber bipolar membrane electrodialysis cell comprising an acid chamber, a salt chamber, and a base chamber; introducing the feed salt stream comprising the amino acid salt into the salt chamber of the three-chamber cell with bipolar membranes; and introducing the aqueous stream into the base chamber of the tri-chamber cell with bipolar membranes. The first acid and the amino acid are different, the amino acid has a pKa greater than 2.0, and the first acid introduced into the acid chamber of the three-chamber cell with bipolar membranes has a pKa less than the pKa of the amino acid. The invention also relates to various embodiments of said method, including methods for the preparation and recovery of iminodiacetic acid.
