FIELD: chemical technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in production of magnesium hydroxide from solutions of magnesium salts by precipitation with gaseous ammonia, including from polycomponent hydro-mineral raw materials with a high calcium content. The method for producing magnesium hydroxide from a solution containing magnesium ions by interacting with gaseous ammonia with stirring includes purging the reactor with nitrogen or an inert gas and introducing gaseous ammonia into the reactor. Ammonia is introduced into the reactor in an amount that provides a molar ratio of ammonia to magnesium equal to a value from 2.5:1 to 4:1. The resulting mass containing magnesium hydroxide is filtered and washed under nitrogen or an inert gas atmosphere.
EFFECT: isolation of magnesium hydroxide from solutions of magnesium salts with high selectivity in one stage is provided, including when using multicomponent hydro-mineral raw materials with a high content of calcium as an initial solution.
