SUBSTANCE: method for decoding a sequence of images using a gradual update procedure is proposed. Specifically, all regions in one image are progressively encoded or decoded over a plurality of images associated with the image, while decoding the group size information to identify the group of images associated with the first image to which the gradual update has been applied; determining a picture order counter (POC) value of a second picture corresponding to the last picture belonging to the group based on the group size information and the first picture POC value; and determining a group of pictures associated with the first picture using the first picture's POC value and the second picture's POC value, where pictures having a POC value greater than or equal to the first picture's POC value and less than the second picture's POC value are not allowed to be displayed after decoding.
