SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of video encoding and decoding, and more specifically to a method for gradually encoding or decoding the entire area in an image over a set of images associated with the image. A method for decoding video using gradual updating is proposed, containing: decoding, from the sequence header in the bitstream, a flag indicating whether gradual updating is allowed; decoding of identification information to identify the first image to which a gradual update has been applied, in sequence, and determining the value of the image order counter (IOC) of the first image; decoding of group size information to identify a group of images associated with the first image to which a gradual update has been applied; determining the value of the IOC of the second image corresponding to the last image, belonging to a group, based on information about the size of the group; and the definition of a group of images associated with the first image, using the value of the first image and the value of the second image.

EFFECT: increase in decoding efficiency.
