SUBSTANCE: system includes a cartridge containing a storage compartment configured to accommodate a liquid composition containing an aerosol-forming substrate, an aerosol generating device configured to accommodate the cartridge and containing a power supply unit and control electronics functionally connected to the power supply unit. The light source is functionally connected to the control electronics and positioned to emit light into the cartridge storage compartment. Light emitted by the light source is absorbed by the liquid composition. The detector is functionally coupled to the control electronics and positioned to detect light emitted by the light source. The light source and the detector are located adjacent to the same side of the storage compartment. The surface of the storage compartment opposite the light source is configured to absorb light emitted by the light source into the storage compartment.

EFFECT: ability to determine the level of liquid filling of the cartridge in order to replace or update the cartridge and overcome the negative consequences of using the device in the absence of liquid or its insufficient amount.
