FIELD: towing equipment.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a system and method by which one or more towed marine objects can be controlled. Marine objects can be submerged objects (for example, trawls or offshore towed seismic streamers) or objects that float on the surface of the water (for example, barges, floating platforms or ships). The control system for a towed object (1; 6; 20; 30; 50) in or on the surface of a body of water contains one or more towing elements (3) extending between the object (1) and the towing vessel (2). One or more ballast elements (4) are movably connected to a corresponding one or more towing elements (3) and are controllably movable at least a distance along their respective towing element. The towed object (1) can be controlled by moving one or more ballast elements (4) on the towing element (3) to control the sag (c) of the towing element (3). Individual ballast elements (4) can be adjusted individually to adjust, maintain or change the trawl geometry.
