FIELD: environmental protection.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to eliminate spills of oil and petroleum products - oils, fuel oil, fuels and hydrocarbons - from the surface of water and hard surfaces, as well as to clean up water streams contaminated with oil or petroleum products. A method for binding oil and petroleum products is disclosed. To implement the method, an oil-binding polymer material, polynorbornene, is applied to the contaminated surface in the form of polystyrene foam granules with an open cellular structure with a granule size of 0.25-2 mm, a bulk density of 75-250 kg/m3 and a porosity of 60-85%. Polynorbornene was obtained by precipitation metathesis polymerization in the presence of a phenolic antioxidant, followed by mechanical grinding, vacuum drying, and dispersion to form granules of a given size. An oil-binding polymer material is applied to the contaminated surface in an amount that ensures the binding of oil and petroleum products within 5-15 minutes.
EFFECT: increased efficiency of binding oil and petroleum products from a contaminated surface and speeding up the process by improving the performance characteristics of the oil-binding polymer material with increased sorption capacity.
