SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to various configurations of the filter medium. Provided is a filter medium comprising a support layer comprising a first surface characterized by a treatment that increases the roll angle of the first surface for a 50 mcl water droplet if the first surface is immersed in toluene, wherein the support layer has a first edge and a second edge and the support layer defines a set grooves extending between the first edge and the second edge; and a filter medium comprising a first support layer comprising a first surface characterized by a treatment that increases the rolling angle of the first surface for a 50 mcl drop of water if the first surface is immersed in toluene, wherein the first the backing layer has a first edge and a second edge and the first backing layer is grooved, defining groove peaks and groove valleys; and a second backing layer coupled to the first backing layer, wherein the second backing layer is planar and the first backing layer and the second backing layer jointly define a plurality of grooves extending between the first edge and the second edge. In another embodiment, a filter medium is provided comprising a first support layer defining a first surface characterized by a roll angle ranging from 50 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle ranging from 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 mcl water droplet, if the first surface is immersed in toluene; and a second support layer adjacent the first support layer, wherein the second support layer defines a second surface characterized by a roll angle ranging from 50 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle ranging from 90 degrees to 180 degrees for the droplet 50 mcl of water if the second surface is immersed in toluene. Also provided is a filter medium comprising a first support layer comprising a first surface, which is a surface subjected to UV treatment; and a second support layer adjacent the first support layer, wherein the second support layer includes a second surface containing a polymer containing a hydrophilic group, wherein each of the first surface and the second surface is characterized by a roll angle ranging from 50 degrees to 90 degrees, and a contact angle ranging from 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 mcl water droplet immersed in toluene; and a filter medium comprising a first substrate having a first porosity value and defining a first surface; and a second substrate adjacent to the first substrate, wherein the second substrate is characterized by a second porosity value and defines a second surface, where the first porosity value is greater than the second porosity value, and where each of the first surface and the second surface is characterized by a treatment that increases the roll angle surface for a 50 mcl drop of water if the surface is immersed in toluene.
EFFECT: group of inventions provides various configurations of filter media that have improved efficiency in separating water from a hydrocarbon fluid.
