A method of preventing or treating urinary incontinence or overactive bladder is provided, the said method includes preparing a composition containing a modifying agent and locally administering the composition to a subject to prevent or treat urinary incontinence or overactive bladder. The modifying agent contains a Lactobacillus gasseri strain that provides neuromodulatory activity through activation of at least one of the maoA enzymes, maoB enzymes and grin-1 genes, or a Lactobacillus crispatus strain that provides a decrease in the amount of ATP in the target medium. Also the following is provided: a composition for the prevention or treatment of urinary incontinence or overactive bladder in a subject containing a carrier and a modifying agent containing a strain of Lactobacillus gasseri or an enzyme or metabolite thereof selected from the group consisting of the following: Lactobacillus gasseri with ATCC designation No. PTA-125162, Lactobacillus gasseri with ATCC designation No. PTA-125163 and combinations thereof.
