FIELD: biotechnology.
SUBSTANCE: following is provided: compositions and methods involving the use of a combination containing 50 billion colony forming units (CFU) of 1–5% live Lactobacillus acidophilus, 75–85% live Lactobacillus casei and 5–10% live Lactobacillus rhamnosus, to relieve gastrointestinal distress in a subject in need, selected from the following group: irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), abdominal pain, bloating and constipation. Also the following is provided: compositions and methods involving the use of the said combination for the relief of IBS in a human subject. A method of drug therapy for the prevention or treatment of IBS using the specified combination is also proposed.
EFFECT: invention provides effective relief of gastrointestinal distress for alleviating gastrointestinal distress in a subject in need thereof selected from the group consisting of IBS, abdominal pain, bloating and constipation.
