FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method for producing high-molecular compounds, namely a method for producing poly-N-vinylimidazole, used in the creation of cosmetic compositions, sorbents and delivery systems for biologically active substances. A method for producing poly-N-vinylimidazole with a narrow molecular weight distribution and monomer conversion of more than 69% is described, which consists in adding N-vinylimidazole monomer to the dehydrated dimethylformamide medium, the mixture is degassed, after which hydrochloric acid is added in the ratio monomer: HCl = 1:1 mol., ethylα-bromoisobutyrate initiator and a mixture of copper(I) bromide catalyst with ligand 2,2'-bipyridyl, ascorbic acid in the molar ratio monomer: initiator: ligand: CuBr: ascorbic acid in the range 100-300:1:0.8:0.1:10, the resulting reaction mixture is kept at a temperature of 50°C for 24 hours, after which a 0.2 N aqueous solution of NaOH is added to the reaction mixture with constant stirring to pH = 9-10, the precipitate is filtered off, the filtrate is precipitated in acetone, the polymer precipitate is purified in a Soxhlet extractor with ethyl alcohol for 24 hours, then dried in a vacuum oven at 55°C to constant mass.

EFFECT: providing a method for producing poly-N-vinylimidazole with a narrow molecular weight distribution without the use of expensive or highly toxic components, characterized by high monomer conversion and the absence of additional stages of dealkylation of the product.
