SUBSTANCE: aerosol generating device includes an air flow path into which ambient air is drawn and through which air flows through the device; and an evaporator. The air flow path includes a first part, a second part, and a transition part between the first part and the second part. The transition part is arranged in such a way that the direction of the air flow path changes from the first part to the second part. The evaporator is configured to generate steam from the aerosol generating substrate in the region of the transition portion of the air flow path. The evaporator is located in the side wall of the transition part. The aerosol generating device further comprises a cartridge receiving area configured to receive the cartridge. The cartridge contains a liquid substrate that generates an aerosol. The area for housing the cartridge contains a connecting part configured to establish a fluid connection with the cartridge. The orientation of the connecting part is determined by the plane of extension of the connecting part. The plane of extension is located at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating device.
