FIELD: oil and gas industry.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used when transporting compressed natural gas through main pipelines, sections of which cross water barriers in northern climatic zones with areas of permafrost soils in the interseasonal climatic periods of April-May and September-October. Natural gas located in the main and reserve lines in the underwater section of the main gas pipeline is alternately cooled to a water temperature at the depth of the gas pipeline in the range from plus 1°C to plus 1.8°C in one of the threads. With further throttling - the selection of cooled gas through a bypass valve - the temperature of the transported gas decreases to negative temperatures from the range of minus 0.1°C to minus 1.6°C.
EFFECT: reduction in the operating time of installations involved in the gas cooling process during off-season periods, and a reduction in material and fuel and energy costs for transporting natural gas.
