SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to an elevator braking device comprising a cabin moving along guides. Braking device comprises a main body intended for attachment to an elevator cabin or a counterweight, in a properly mounted state, enclosing the guide, holding one braking member in the required position on one side of the guide and the other braking member in the required position on the opposite side of the guide, wherein at least one of the braking members is held in its ready position at a distance from the guide by means of a switchable retaining magnet acting against the force of the self-actuating actuator, in such a way that when the holding magnet is switched by the actuating element, the braking element is pressed from the holding magnet to the guide, as a result of which an air gap between the holding magnet and the braking element is created, wherein the braking device is made in such a way that the braking element is retracted between the main body and the guide, if by the moment the braking element comes into contact with the guide, there is a movement greater than only insignificant of the elevator cabin, that the holding magnet is equipped with a means of reducing the air gap, by means of which the air gap between the retaining magnet and the braking member not yet drawn in between the guide and the main body can be reduced or eliminated so that magnetic retention of the gripped braking member by the retaining magnet takes place again immediately after corresponding switching of the latter.

EFFECT: creation of a braking device which, when actuated, can be returned to the initial state simply, quickly and without danger of excessive wear of guides.
