FIELD: imaging devices.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an apparatus and methods for generating an image signal. Method comprises receiving a plurality of source images representing a scene from different viewing positions, wherein the viewing posture comprises a viewing position and a viewing direction; formation of multiple combined images from source images, wherein each combined image is obtained from a set of at least two source images of a plurality of source images, each corresponding pixel of the merged image represents a scene property at the point of intersection of the corresponding beam with the scene, wherein the beam has an onset position and a direction which together define a beam position, and wherein each combined image includes at least two different pixels representing beam poses for different corresponding beam pose start positions; determination of prediction quality measures for elements of a plurality of source images, wherein the prediction quality measure for the element of the first source image indicates the difference between the pixel values in the element and the predicted pixel values in the element, and the predicted pixel values are pixel values obtained by predicting pixel values in an element based on a plurality of combined images; determining segments of source images containing elements for which the prediction quality measure indicates a difference above a threshold value; and generating an image signal containing image data, representing combined images, and image data representing segments of original images.

EFFECT: high rate of data transmission owing to formation of merged images.
