FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to treatment of spent magnesia-carbon articles for further use as raw material for making refractories. Treatment method uses spent magnesia-carbon articles, which consist of magnesium oxide MgO, which accounts for at least 69 wt.% in terms of total weight of magnesia-carbon articles, carbon, which accounts for at least 1 wt.% in terms of total weight of magnesia-carbon articles, and which contain Al4C 3 of at least 0.1 wt.% in terms of total weight of magnesia-carbon articles, and also using water and gas containing carbon dioxide, wherein content of carbon dioxide in gas is higher than content of carbon dioxide in air, and is more than 0.04 vol.% in terms of total volume of this gas. Said magnesia-carbon articles are placed in the autoclave space, which is closed in a gas-proof manner. Said space is exposed to temperature ranging from 100 to 320°C and pressure in range of 0.1 to 10 MPa, while ensuring the presence of water and said gas in it. Magnesia-carbon articles treated by said method are unloaded from the autoclave, mixed with magnesium oxide and graphite to obtain a charge, and a refractory article is made from the charge.
EFFECT: fast reduction of content of aluminium carbide Al4C3 in magnesia-carbonaceous article with simultaneous suppression of brucite formation to exclude damages in manufactured new refractory.
