SUBSTANCE: invention relates to X-ray diagnostics in dentistry and can be used to determine the severity of chronic periodontitis. X-ray examination is carried out by cone-beam computed tomography with measurement of full length of root from enamel-cement border to root apex and length of its open part. Cross-section is selected in which the length of the root of the tooth or for multi-rooted teeth of the medial root is maximum. Measurements are taken in coronary and sagittal projections along medial and distal surfaces. Full length of the root is denoted by h_fn, the length of its open part is denoted by h_on; the value of periodontal atrophy of tooth (a) is calculated by formula . In accordance with the obtained calculation results, the degree of severity of chronic periodontitis is determined: I degree, mild,—volume of periodontal atrophy is not more than 35 %; II degree, medium,—volume of periodontal atrophy in range of 36–65 %; III degree, severe,—volume of periodontal atrophy more than 66 % with loss of less than 4 teeth; IV degree, extremely severe,—volume of periodontal atrophy more than 66 % with loss of 4 teeth and more.

EFFECT: method enables higher accuracy and objectivity of determining the degree of severity of chronic periodontitis, can be used for a single tooth, and for a group of teeth by setting the volume of periodontal atrophy.
