FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process of linear alpha-olefins production. The following is described: a catalytic composition for the production of linear alpha-olefins by oligomerization of ethylene, where the said catalyst composition contains: (i) a zirconium compound having the formula ZrXm•nA, where X represents a halogen atom, m is an integer having a value from 1 to 4, n is a number ranging from 1 to 2, and A is selected from the group consisting of tetrahydrofuran, N,N-diisobutylacetamide, or both; (ii) an organoaluminum compound of formula R1nAIY3-n or formula Al2Y3R13, wherein R1 is an alkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, Y is Cl, Br or I, n is any number in the range from 1 to 2; and (iii) at least one Lewis base, wherein the Lewis base is selected from cyclic and acyclic ethers, wherein the molar ratio of zirconium to Lewis base is from 1:10 to 1:30. Also the following is described: a method of producing the specified catalytic composition, and a method of producing linear alpha-olefins by oligomerization of ethylene, including oligomerization of ethylene in an inert organic solvent in the presence of the specified catalytic composition at a reaction temperature of 50°C up to 150°C, producing more than 95 wt.% alpha-olefins and trace amounts of polymer by-product.

EFFECT: ensuring high activity of the specified catalytic composition, which leads to a high yield of alpha-olefins (>95 wt.%) as a product and a significant minimum of polymer as a by-product.
