The aerosol generating system comprises: a substrate on which an aerosol generating material is located, comprising a first surface and a second surface located opposite the first surface; a heating energy source facing the second surface of the substrate, configured to heat the aerosol generating material to generate an aerosol; and a drive mechanism for moving the aerosol generating material relative to the heating energy source; wherein the aerosol generating material is rotatable relative to the heating energy source such that portions of the aerosol generating material are supplied to the heating energy source; wherein the aerosol generating material rotates about an axis at an angle to the first surface, wherein the drive mechanism is configured to further allow the heating energy source to move linearly along an axis extending between the heating energy source and the first surface, and the energy source to heating is configured to move linearly before the aerosol generating material rotates relative to the heating energy source.
