SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and a device for quantum key distribution. In the quantum key distribution method, test optical signals on the sender side are generated with polarization states corresponding to Stokes vectors:

and transmitting them from the sender to the recipient for each j-th basis, at the same time on the recipient's side performing the polarization of the test signals until the corresponding j-th basis of the receiver is aligned with the Sl axis on the Poincaré sphere, measured are polarization intensity projections Px1j, Px2j, Px3j and Py1j, Py2j, Py3j, for two orthogonal polarization planes of each received test signal, measured values are used to calculate projections t1j, t2j, and t3j of Stokes vectors of the received test signals on the axis Sl of the Poincaré sphere according to the following:
